You snooze, you lose…
Fancy dress, time trials, beds…
There’s only one thing that could mean – it’s the Great Knaresborough Bed Race.
And if you aren’t from around here, we’re telling you now, it’s kind of a big deal.
Where fancy dress meets time trials, all the while pushing a passenger on a bed. It’s one of the biggest events in the community and it’s a lot of fun.
Racers make their way over a 2.4-mile course ending with a swim through the chilly waters of the River Nidd.
It all starts with a parade where the best dressed team leads the way. They’re joined by marching bands, dancers, and a whole bunch of spectators there to make the event the spectacle that it is. This year’s theme is heroes and villains, and if the last few years are anything to go by, competitors will be going all out to secure they’re front in line.
After the parade, competitors strip their bed and their own fancy dress costumes and take their place at the starting line. Each of the six team members take to a pole and run while escorting their bed ridden passenger.
The bed race has been a highlight of the Harrogate social calendar since 1966. And involves 90 teams of six runners and a passenger in the bed. That’s 630-people making their way through the course!
It’s a feel-good event and to top it all off, the money raised goes to charity.
Good luck to everyone taking part this Saturday!
